THREE HOUSE CALLS BEFORE BREAKFAST

(April 27, 2010)

Market Square Strings      Many years ago, when someone got sick and a trip to the Doctor wasn't possible, the Doctor would make a "House Call"... He (or she) would come to the patient, and with a kind word, a gentle touch and often the right medicine from his bag, make things all better. Though this practice has become very rare these days, it is alive and well at Market Square Strings!

Just yesterday, I received e-mails from a couple of Music Teachers containing urgent requests: Instruments are broken and the concert is coming up. Would it be possible to get them fixed quickly? So, this morning at 7AM, I arrived at what was to be the first of three "House Calls". A violin's endbutton had broken, sending strings and parts flying in all directions. Unable to remove the broken piece on site, I gathered the parts and took the instrument with me. I said "I'll be back in a bit" to the security person at the door, and after a quick conversation with a student about her college plans and her need for some new strings, moved on to the next emergency.

House Call #2 was a similar problem, with one small difference. This "patient" I was able to treat on site, so I replaced the broken piece, reassembled everything and tuned up the instrument before placing it on the teacher's desk with a note that read "All Set"!

Call #3 was to deliver a replacement for a violin that sadly could not be fixed. With all that done, and it still not yet 8AM, I moved on to my workshop. There I was quickly able to repair the first violin, did a little "operation" on a cello on my workbench, and returned to the first school, repaired instrument in hand. As promised, I dropped it off with the same person I had seen less than an hour earlier. "Back so soon" she asked - and of course I replied as I always do: "All fixed...no problem". It was 9AM, and my next stop was a well earned breakfast!!
